Baker Alum Ryan Pitts Named Head Track & Field Coach

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Baker University Director of Athletics Theresa Yetmar announced the hiring of Baker alumnus Ryan Pitts as the new head coach of the Wildcats’ track and field program on Monday.

Pitts graduated from Baker in 2006 after a successful career on the football field and on the track for the ‘Cats. He was named an NAIA All-American wide receiver in 2005 and was a national indoor and outdoor qualifier in the high hurdles in 2006.

He spent the last year serving the Baker football coaching staff as the wide receivers coach and the track & field coaching staff as an assistant coach focusing on the sprints, jumps and hurdle athletes.

Coach Pitts was a key contributor to the Wildcats’ four Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships this year, as they captured the men’s and women’s indoor track & field championship and the men’s and women’s outdoor track & field championships.

Baker also qualified 15 athletes to the 2015 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama in May.

“We are pleased that Ryan will be our next head men's and women's track & field coach,” said Yetmar. “As an alum, Ryan has a great understanding of Baker University, its mission and values, and our expectations for our athletic programs. He was an integral member of our staff this season that persevered through extreme adversity to championship success. We are confident that Ryan will be a strong leader for us and continue our tradition of excellence in track & field.”

Before his coaching career at Baker, Pitts served as the head girls track and field coach at Warren High School in Downey, California, from 2010 to 2012 and was the assistant track and field coach at North Torrance High School in Torrance, California, from 2007 to 2010.

Pitts will now primarily take over as the head track and field coach at Baker but will work alongside Tim Byers, the newly hired director of cross country and track and field.

Coach Byers will oversee the cross country programs as the head coach, while also serving Coach Pitts as an assistant track and field coach.

“I am beyond ecstatic to take over the highly successful track & field program at my alma mater,” said Pitts. “It is my goal to continue the winning lineage of conference championships that have been established prior to my arrival as a coach. The conference will expand by five teams next season, and we will be prepared for the challenge. This team showed a lot of character last season and fought through a lot of adversity. We will carry that momentum into next season and hope to repeat as champions in both the indoor and outdoor conference championship meets.”
