Tension filled the air Saturday afternoon when North coach Michael Pope called his cross country team together and told them he had good news and bad news.

Twenty minutes earlier in a state-qualifying race, the boys had seemingly run an identical race as West with the winner of the duel coming out with the final team berth to the Class 6A meet.

The team wanted the bad news out of the way first.
