HAYSVILLE – During what would become the best triple jump in the career of Ezekiel Welch, the Maize senior said that he felt like he was in slow motion.

He had torn through his first phase, which set him up for the jumps. The first leap felt far, then the second one he knew something great was coming. Then came a takeoff that seemed airborne for an unnatural amount of time.

When Welch landed near the end of the pit, he had covered an astounding 49 feet to win the triple jump competition at the Campus Invitational on Friday evening.
