On the throw that would land him in the Derby track and field record book, junior Trenton Allen does not remember feeling the javelin leave his hand. When that happens, when the release is so smooth that it feels like his arm is an extension of the spear, Allen knows good things are about to happen. On Friday, Allen ripped a throw of 191 feet, 5 1/2 inches to win the competition at the Campus Invitational. The mark is a Derby record, the third-best throw this season in Kansas, and the 18th-best throw in the country. It was also a 13-foot improvement over Allen’s previous-best throw.
