After Derby senior Christian Compton went 14 feet, 6 inches to win his first Class 6A pole vault title, he handed out donuts to each of the volunteers working at the pole vault. It’s something he’s done at each meet this season, but the tradition that mattered most to him was when many fans at Cessna Stadium did a slow clap while watching one of his vaults. “It’s a dream. I’ve always wanted that,” Compton said. “To get that is just, I feel like I’ve accomplished something in this chapter of my life that I’ve always wanted to get.
